Harlandale legends return to celebrate 50th anniversary of 10-0 season

It has been 50 years since a Harlandale High School Football team has finished the regular season undefeated but if you ask the members of the team, it feels like just the other day.

“It feels like we never left,” said Daniel Sosa who played offensive guard for the 1966 undefeated team.

Sosa and his teammates were honored prior to the Harlandale vs. Central Catholic football game on Sept 9. in front of a packed  Indian crowd at Harlandale Memorial Stadium. The 1966 team walked side-by-side out of the tunnel with great pride as they are the only team in the 92 year history of Harlandale HS football to complete a regular season undefeated.

“It’s great to look back and be a part of something so special,” said Sosa. “I was very fortunate to be around such a great group of guys and the memories created on the field at Harlandale HS are memories that will last forever.”

Sosa hopes this year’s team and coaching staff can learn a few things from their success.

“The pressure built every week. Each game became more crucial but we always kept the mindset to take one play at a time and one game at a time,” added Sosa.

Coach Isaac Martinez echoed this message to his players and staff.

“Going unbeaten during the regular season is not an easy task. It was great to chat and learn from their experiences. I think the coaching staff learned just as much from the 1966 team as our athletes,” said Martinez.
