Carroll Bell Elementary fifth grade student Hailey Sosa is representing Harlandale ISD in the Mayor’s Fitness Council Student Ambassador Program. Hailey is the only elementary student in the district selected to participate in this city-wide initiative.

The goal of the Mayor’s Fitness Council is to educate, empower and equip students with tools and leadership skills to be healthy change agents.

Student ambassadors promote health, wellness and physical fitness at their campus and in their surrounding community.

Hailey was nominated for the program by Carroll Bell physical education teacher Mr. Fabian Villarreal.

“Last year, I noticed that Hailey was very active, she enjoyed sports and all the activities we did during physical education, she is really energetic and passionate about fitness and health,” Villarreal said. “Of course as a coach, I love to see students interested in that.”

When he heard about the Mayor’s Fitness Council, Hailey immediately crossed his mind.

She’s a part of the Kids School Health Advisory Council (KSHAC), Student Council and is in the midst of developing Gardening Club.

As part of the program, ambassadors are required to complete a service project during the 2016-2017 school year. Hailey will implement a school garden that will sprout broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots, chard swiss, collards, pumpkins and other delicious veggies. Once the garden is up and reaping, she hopes to host tastings in an effort to introduce the community to healthy eating options.

“It’s important to be healthy so that when you get sick you are able to fight off that sickness,” Hailey said.

Villarreal will serve as her campus mentor and will guide her through activities related to the program. He’s excited to see what Hailey comes up with next.

“She has full support from the staff, administration and from her parents,” Villarreal added.

Good luck, Hailey!
