Adams Elementary earns Silver Recycling Certification

Adams Elementary School has received the ReWorksSA Silver Recycling Certification from the City of San Antonio Solid Waste Management Department for launching its campus recycling program earlier this spring.

ReWorksSA Representatives Brian Halverson and Uzair Iqbal visited the campus Tuesday morning to personally congratulate Principal Leticia Cerda-Rodriguez, Social Worker Jennifer Montes and the student recycling group, Green Team, for their environmental leadership on campus.

More than 25 students participate in Green Team activities such as distributing recycling bins to every classroom, collecting recycling materials and encouraging others to follow suit.

“The students are invested, the staff is invested and, of course, the club itself is very much invested in the program,” Principal Cerda-Rodriguez said. “Receiving this certification is exciting because you get to show the kids that it’s something they’ve done on their own.”

Social Worker Jennifer Montes is proud of the students and shared how it was their idea to begin the recycling program.

“It’s a student-led project, and they want to ensure that it continues, hopefully, for years to come,” she said. “They are the ones doing the recycling and collecting. We showed them what items belong in the recycling bin and what belongs in the trash, and they look forward to recycling every Tuesday and Thursday. They do a good job and are eager to continue to do it.”

The Silver status will be effective from May 2018 to May 2020, and Adams Elementary will also be listed on Certified Businesses page of the ReWorksSA website.

Congratulations, Wolves!
