McCollum High School hosted a special reception and ceremony in honor of its Summa Cum Laude graduates on May 16.

The eight students were invited to celebrate their accomplishments with their families and an educator of their choosing.

“This is not only a special opportunity for us to recognize our students, but also to recognize the educators who have impacted our students,” McCollum Principal Jacob Garcia said. “What’s unique about this event is that it is not just about McCollum, we asked the students to find an educator who impacted them in a special way from kindergarten through 12th grade.”

Students selected teachers from their elementary, middle school and high school years.

“When I was on a middle school campus coaching, teaching and then as a principal, we never had the opportunity to see a completed student,” Garcia said. “We would send them off to high school, we never had an opportunity to see the end product, so I think this is a special time for our feeder schools, our feeder teachers to really come in and be honored in this way.”

To kick-off the ceremony, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Samantha Gallegos spoke to the students and teachers about the importance of perseverance, commitment, dedication and service. After the ceremony, it was evident that all of the graduates and educators in attendance embodied these characteristics.

Araceli Avitia-Gonzalez proudly honored her pre-calculus dual credit teacher Gabriel Renero, Laura Filerio recognized her fifth grade teacher Roberto Soto, Abigail Flores selected her basketball coach Donicia Rodriguez, Om Patel invited his middle school CATE Tech App teacher Jesse Anguiano, Viviana Quezada selected her third grade teacher Virginia Rivas, Celeste Ramirez invited her track and field coach Carlos Santiago, Michael Roberts recognized his seventh grade English teacher Joyce Brite, and Roberto Soto honored his AVID teacher Loraine Martinez.

Each student had the opportunity to share special remarks about how their selected teacher left a lasting impression in their lives. The students then presented their educator with a certificate and the teachers presented the students with their Summa Cum Laude medals.

Congratulations to the outstanding graduates and educators!
