Harlandale ISD hosts fifth annual Ingenium Engineering Fair

The Harlandale Independent School District recently hosted its fifth annual Ingenium Engineering Fair at the Palo Alto College Performing Arts Center.

More than 500 Gifted and Talented students from first through eighth grade participated in the three-day competition by completing an engineering project and presenting their project to a panel of judges.

“Each student was excited to share their game and, more importantly, how their game could improve the quality of life around us, just like a true engineer,” Harlandale ISD STEM/GT Coordinator Anthony Khosravi said. “We were so pleased with all the hard work they displayed in not only preparing their projects, but also sharing their ideas and creations with a panel of judges.”

Elementary students were provided the theme “Building a Business: Games and Toys.” Projects included such ideas as a game that promotes growth mindset thinking and another game that educates people about space exploration.

Middle school students were allowed to identify a problem of their choosing, with the direction to use the engineering design process as a system of creating a solution and/or prototype for the problem they see in their everyday life. These students represented not only Gifted and Talented, but also students from STEM classes and Pre-Advanced Placement (PreAP) classes within Harlandale ISD. Projects included such ideas as a robotic whale that would swim around the ocean and clean up the trash and debris in the water, along with an app, which was coded by a middle school student that would allow parents, students and teachers to communicate with each other through an app with reference to grades and student progress.

Along with the excitement of presenting their projects to judges throughout the day, students were also part of a rotation of STEM-based (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities and programs that were provided by community organizations as well as in-district groups.

Students were allowed to build and launch their very own paper rocket in an activity presented by Leal Middle School Teacher Gabriel Garcia. Garcia teaches the Gateway To Technology classes, which is a STEM-based curriculum provided by Project Lead The Way. Other activities and organizations included Microsoft and San Antonio Water System (SAWS), as well as Snapology, a local robotics instructional company that helped each student build a Lego maze.

“Students were very engaged in each presentation and activity, and enjoyed being exposed to various organizations and topics within STEM,” Khosravi added. “We would like to send a huge thank you to everybody involved in making sure this event was a success for our students!”

An award ceremony was also held after the fair to celebrate those projects which were recognized as exceptional and thereby earned either a Teacher’s Award, and Innovator’s Award, and our top three projects in each grade level which received the highest ratings according to our panel of judges.
