Harlandale Middle School students enjoyed an evening full of learning during the school’s Family STEAM Night on Feb. 7.

As a celebration of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, students participated in a variety of hands-on activities and interactive challenges.

“We know that the STEM fields in general can be somewhat intimidating, especially to children who haven’t experienced them in their community or culture, so we want kids to get out here and realize that just being naturally curious is the foundation of this,” Harlandale MS Science Teacher Kimberly Jones said. “Ideally, we would want for some of them to choose a STEM field as a career.”

The young innovators stopped by every station, which included VEX Robotics, Forensics Fun, Space Docking, Catapults, Stop Motion Animation, Heart Rate Math, Straw Rockets and a Planetarium.

Eighth-grader Magdalena Keller was excited to attend and participate in all the activities.

“My favorite part has been robotics, it’s been a lot of fun playing the games,” Magdalena said. “I want to be an architectural engineer, so I always like the games where you have to use teamwork.”

The San Antonio Public Library and the McNay Art Museum were also present to offer fun, creative activities.

After completing every activity, students and their families received a delicious cupcake.
