A total of 55 students from Harlandale Middle School’s AVID class recently visited Texas A&M University in College Station.

During the trip, the eighth-graders had the opportunity to tour the campus and dorms, meet with admission counselors, eat in a student-dining hall and learn all about the Aggie traditions.

This is the fifth year that Harlandale MS AVID Teacher Kellie George organizes the trip to help her students get a glimpse of college life.

“I hope they are fired up about the college experience, and are ready to start high school with the goal of being accepted to a college like TAMU,” George said. “I'm an Aggie myself; so of course, I enjoy sharing my own college with them, but I am also really impressed with the program the university has in place.  The tour they give is incredible.”

The AVID program works to erase the opportunity gap and provide students with life experiences to boost their academic success and help prepare them for college.
