Harlandale ISD staff, parents and students come together to promote inclusion

Harlandale ISD, in partnership with Edgewood ISD (EISD), Kinetic Kids and Believe It Foundation, hosted its second annual “Get Active, Crossing the Bridge of Inclusion Together” event at Harlandale Memorial Stadium on Oct. 23.

This year, the event expanded over three sport fields to welcome more than 1,300 students, parents and staff from both districts working together to promote inclusion in the community.

“We were thrilled when EISD decided to join our initiative, it has been an amazing partnership,” HISD Director of Special Education Della Taylor said. “We want to show other school districts how beneficial this event is for all of our children. They get active and participate in all of the activities with their peers. Our ultimate goal is to include all of San Antonio.”

Alongside HISD and EISD Partners in PE Buddies, children with special needs had the opportunity to ride adaptive bikes, participate in sensory tables and learn about numerous adaptive sports such as soccer, football and baseball.

“We are really excited to continue to promote inclusion here today,” HISD Adaptive PE Coordinator William McGinnis said. “This year, we have more activities and more students participating. We just really want to get the students involved and show them that the differences don’t make them that difference at all. We can all enjoy working with each other.”

During the event, the Believe It Foundation and Kinetic Kids were also providing information and resources for both children with special needs and students in the Partners in PE program.

EISD Director of Special Education Joe Hinojosa was also happy to see all the big smiles from all the students collaborating and learning from each other.

“This is amazing, it’s all about inclusion,” Hinojosa said. “It goes to show that it doesn’t matter school districts or boundaries. Seeing all of our students work together is a great feeling.”

A special thank you goes to Cheesy Jane’s for donating more than 1,300 burgers and providing lunch to all of the event’s participants.
