Student safety, social media and campus changes were some of the topics discussed during the third Student Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting of the school year held at STEM Early College High School on Feb. 11.

The student leaders in grades 6-12 had the opportunity to hear from recently appointed Harlandale ISD Superintendent Gerardo Soto, who shared advice on the dangers of social media and encouraged them to be themselves.

“Do not believe everything you see on social media and do not believe who you’re talking to, you have to be very careful,” he told them. “You guys are leaders at your campus. The number one thing you have to do in your life is be happy with yourself. Do not ever compare yourself to another individual. We all have differences, which makes us who we are. So, do your best because that is all we can do.”

Harlandale ISD Police Chief Michael Ramirez and Corporal Mark Olivarez also attended the meeting to share school safety tips and raise awareness about human trafficking. They shared how San Antonio is one of the top cities dealing with human trafficking and recommended students avoid answering personal questions online and to walk in groups. They encouraged all students to always report any suspicious activity by calling (210) 932-SAFE.

Afterwards, the students participated in a fun human bingo game, where they were able to connect with their peers from across the district. They also participated in a group activity and proposed new campus changes to the superintendent such as new menu items and new classroom equipment.

“These are the student ambassadors who will share our message and come to us for guidance,” Soto said. “I’m excited to continue moving forward with these young leaders.”

The last SAC meeting is scheduled for May 19 at Central Office.
