Superintendent's Message

Message from the Superintendent
August 21, 2017

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year that will officially begin when student start classes on Monday, August 28. Elementary school hours are 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.  Middle School hours are 7:55 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.  Harlandale and McCollum High School hours are 8:20 a.m. to 4:05 p.m.  STEM Early College High School hours are 8:25 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Frank Tejeda Academy students attend from 8:20 a.m. to 3:55 p.m.

All schools and offices will be closed for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 4. Grandparents’ Day will be celebrated on Sept. 10, and we want to thank the many grandparents in our school district who are dedicated to helping their grandchildren receive a high quality education.

The deadline to turn in nominations for the Harlandale Hall of Fame is Sept.6. Harlandale, McCollum and Frank Tejeda alumni who graduated at least 15 years ago, as well as community members who have served the Harlandale area for 10 or more years, are eligible for nomination.

Please be aware of school zones, reduce speed and do not use cell phones for calling or texting when driving. When school buses are stopped and have activated their alternating red flashing lights or stop sign, Texas state law requires drivers to stop. We urge anyone dropping off or picking up students to drive single-file and release students directly on the sidewalk at the designated drop-off zones.  When students have to cross the street, they should use crosswalks and look both ways before crossing.  Students should never exit vehicles in the middle of the street.

For the safety of those within our schools, all visitors must first report to the school’s front office to sign in and be issued a visitor badge. The district provides an anonymous phone line to report neighborhood information including bullying, vandalism or any citizen and student concerns. The phone number is 210-989-SAFE (7233). We extend our appreciation to the citizens of the Harlandale community for helping us keep our children safe.

ESL and GED classes are being offered this fall at College Café, Frank Tejeda Academy, and Esteban Sosa Parent Education Center. For registration information, check the district website or call 210-989-4440.

To purchase football tickets for home games, only cash payments will be accepted. To purchase a reserved or general ticket on the week of the game, visit the Athletics Department. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We look forward to several events that are coming up, such as National Night Out on October 3, Veterans Recognition on October 27, and the Hall of Fame Banquet on November 8. The excitement really builds as we get ready for the annual Frontier Bowl that will be held on November 10. All of these activities honor tradition as we gather from year-to-year.
