MHS student athletes sign letters of intent

Five McCollum High School student-athletes will play at the collegiate level next year after signing their letters of intent.

Joshua Sotello will make it official and sign to play basketball at Midland University in Nebraska on May 7. He will also sign at McCollum HS on May 14. He will major in nursing.

“I am extremely proud of Joshua. He is an amazing kid and works extremely hard,” McCollum HS Basketball Coach Marcus Alvarado said. “There will be a huge adjustment for him playing at that level. I do feel as he grows and learns what the expectations are, he will make the adjustments and will do great!”

The school recently held signing ceremonies for the other four seniors inside the gym in front of students, administrators, coaches, family members and friends.

Jurnee Dimas will play volleyball for Our Lady of the Lake University and will major in kinesiology. Her coach is Valerie Vieyra.

Johnny Garza Jr. will head to Coastal Bend College to play baseball and will major in kinesiology. His coach is Geoff Curtin.

Alec Lafuente will play baseball for Huston-Tillotson University and will major in kinesiology. His coach is Geoff Curtin.

Nicolette Ramirez will play softball for Lamar University. She will major in kinesiology with a minor in biology. Her coach is Valerie Idrogo.

"It thrills me to see all of these Cowboys being honored for their hard work and dedication both for their respective sports and their success in the classroom," McCollum HS Principal Jacob Garcia said. "I am grateful to have them as ambassadors for McCollum HS as they will represent our Cowboy community at their colleges. Best wishes and once Cowboy, always a Cowboy!"

Congratulations and good luck, MHS athletes!
