Dance students from Harlandale HS and McCollum HS were thrilled to participate in a dance master class with members of the Ballet Folklórico of Mexico on Sept. 27.

The master class held at Harlandale High School was provided by nonprofit organization ARTS San Antonio as part of its educational initiative ARTSTEACH.

The young dancers had the opportunity to learn choreography from the repertoire of dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernandez, the ballet’s founder.

“We are happy to be here and teach them a little bit of what we do,” Victor Elias Bustos Carrillo, member of the Ballet Folklórico of Mexico, said. “This particular dance, called ‘Las Amarillas,’ is inspired by the state of Guerrero, and we hope the students enjoy it.”

HHS Dance Teacher Jayme Muñoz shared that this is a once in a lifetime experience for the students.

“The kids are super excited,” she said. “It’s a good experience for them to meet and see professional dancers and that it is actually a possibility to become a professional dancer in the future.”

The dance students were also invited to attend an hour-long performance of Ballet Folklórico of Mexico Friday morning at the Lila Cockrell Theatre.
