Carroll Bell Elementary School’s Student Council recently had the opportunity to tour the KSAT-12 television studios and learn about its daily operations.

The group of 14 students, in third and fifth grade, were welcomed by KSAT’s “Good Morning San Antonio” Executive Producer Brandon Benavides, who is also a Carroll Bell Elementary alumnus.

Throughout the tour, Benavides explained many of the technological innovations the station utilizes to get the news out to local and neighboring communities. From touch screens to sound booths to control rooms, the students were able to see what goes into the making of a newscast.

The students were also able to visit with many of the on-air personalities during the tour. Meteorologist Justin Horne talked to the students about the incorporation of math and science in his field. David Sears and Paul Venema discussed the importance of studying reading and writing when considering journalism as a profession. Jessie Degollado also gave the students a moving impromptu talk about self-confidence.

“The students were very engaged throughout the entire tour,” Carroll Bell Elementary Teacher Cristal Martinez said. “Everyone was hanging on every word. It was such a wonderful learning experience for all of us, teachers included!”

Before leaving, they were all able to watch a taping of the “H-E-B Backyard Kitchen” segment. A few students had the opportunity to maneuver one of the cameras before filming started, which was a fun experience for them as well.

“Many students mentioned how exciting it was to be on the actual sets where the morning show and evening news are filmed,” Martinez added. “Mrs. Castoreno and I were happy to witness our students so engaged on this field trip. We are also very thankful to Mr. Benavides for having us! The tours are usually reserved for older students and are given by other staff. Mr. Benavides, however, was kind enough to take time out of his day to lead our tour. We thanked him with his very own Carroll Bell T-shirt before parting!”
