A group of students, parents and teachers from Columbia Heights Elementary School recently took a trip to the Santikos Mayan Palace 14 Theater to watch the latest Disney movie “A Wrinkle in Time.”

Based on Madeleine L’Engle’s 1962 novel of the same name, the film follows the journey of a young girl, Meg Murry, who travels across dimensions of time and space to rescue her scientist father.

The movie night was inspired after Columbia Heights Elementary Teacher Laura Salas finished reading the book to her third-grade class. Since her students enjoyed the book, Salas thought it would be a fun experience for them to watch the movie.

“My students appreciated the variety of characters, personality styles, comedic dialogue and connection to science fiction,” Salas said. “It was a different style of what they are used to reading.”

Third-grader Trinity Arredondo said, "I liked the part where Meg rescues Charles Wallace,” and third-graders Robert Perez and Christopher Garcia added, "We enjoyed meeting our friends and teachers to go to the same movie."

According to Salas, the students definitely realized how different the book is from the movie. Most of the students noticed several parts of the book were left out of the movie, but weren't too disappointed.

“This was the first movie meet up I have coordinated with the kids and parents,” Salas said. “I truly enjoyed the experience and excitement leading up to our event. I'm hoping to do something like this again before the school year is over.”
