Columbia Heights Elementary students who earned perfect attendance the third six weeks of school enjoyed a fun field day on Feb. 1.

The event featured two moon bounces, a soccer station, volleyball, kickball and a station with hula hoops and sports balls. A dozen soldiers stationed in San Antonio also came out to join in on the fun.

“We just want the students to let their hair down and have fun,” Columbia Heights Social Worker Ellen Parker said. “We also encouraged the students to talk to the solders about their careers.”

This is the first time Columbia Heights hosts this kind of incentive for perfect attendance. The first six weeks they drew out names for free bicycles and the second six weeks they drew out prizes.

“We wanted to do something different so that all of the students with perfect attendance could enjoy it,” Parker added.

The students were split into two groups, pre-k through second grade came out for an hour and the third through fifth grade students came out for the second hour.

Parker hopes these incentives will motivate students to come to school every day.

“It’s important for them to come to school every day to learn, to socialize and to meet their goals for their future,” Parker said.

The campus will continue to host incentives throughout the rest of the year.

Keep up the good work, Columbia Heights!
