Drum Cafe performs for HISD Pre-K students

All Harlandale ISD Pre-K 4 students enjoyed their first on-site field trip of the school year – a fun and interactive performance from Drum Cafe.

The drumming company visited all 13 elementary schools this week, including a stop at the Fenley Center on Sept. 20. The children radiated with joy as they sat down with their own African djembe hand drum. Together, they beat the drum to the beat of word syllables with the help of Drum Cafe Drummer Sevylla del Mazo.

“Song, dance and movement are some of the oldest tools we have as human beings, and so I’m super excited to work with all the Pre-K kids and give them this experience when they’re young,” Del Mazo said. “To have them drumming, singing and dancing, I think it’s really critical to establish strong roots for academic development as they get older.”

The young students filled the room with high energy and big smiles as they clapped, danced and drummed together during the lively performance. Towards the end, the teachers couldn’t help but join the fun as they danced with their students.

“Having Drum Cafe start the field trips for our Pre-K 4 students was our way of saying welcome back to Pre-K, welcome back to school, and just a fun way to engage everyone through music,” Early Childhood Mentor Valerie Ramirez said.

Early Childhood Mentor Jeannette Huerta agreed and added, “This field trip brought a bit of drumming to the kiddos while they learned about respect and following directions. Different academic concepts were also integrated in the drumming program.”

Drum Cafe was just one of the seven on-site field trips planned for the school year, which were all made possible through the Pre-K 4 SA grant.

“We are very excited to be the recipient of the Pre-K 4 SA grant, and we are fortunate to provide these types of events to our Pre-K students,” Early Childhood Administrator Elizabeth Libby said. “Since they are not able to go out on field trips, bringing the experience to Harlandale is absolutely awesome for our kiddos.”

The next on-site field trip will be a visit from The Magik Children’s Theatre.
