Dual Language Family Night brings awareness to HISD community

Harlandale ISD held its first Dual Language Family Night at Harlandale High School on March 22. Mariachi music from Harlandale MS filled the air as parents and students walked in the cafeteria to learn more about the Dual Language program.

As guest speaker, Bexar County 57th District Court Judge Antonio Arteaga addressed the importance of education and how this program will not only benefit students today, but also in their future endeavors.

“Even though both of my parents spoke Spanish, I unfortunately didn’t learn the language as a child,” Arteaga said. “I had to study very hard to learn Spanish as an adult and what I wouldn’t give to have a program like this when I was in school, these students are very lucky.”

The evening followed with different grade level sessions where teachers discussed the Dual Language Program highlights, common questions and answered any questions parents had.

The Gillette and Wright Elementary choirs took the stage singing many songs in Spanish and English while guests enjoyed tamales, rice and beans.

The night ended with an amazing performance from Elsa Champion Academy Folklorico Group.

Bilingual Coordinator Rosa Palafox-Torres said the entire bilingual department and teachers across the district came together for the planning of this great event.

“We hope to bring awareness to the Dual Language Program and inform parents with students already in the program,” Palafox-Torres said. “I’m just so glad that so many community members came together to celebrate bilingualism.”

Families interested in enrolling their children in Dual Language Kindergarten can register now. Harlandale ISD is the only district in San Antonio to offer the program at all of its elementary schools. To register or ask questions, please visit your home campus or call 210-989-4361.
