It is an annual tradition for Gilbert Elementary students to visit the University of Texas at Austin to get a glimpse of what it is like to be a Longhorn for a day through the university’s Explore UT program. Unfortunately, this year’s trip was cancelled due to the weather but the Gilbert Elementary staff did not want the students to miss out on the opportunity.

“The staff of Gilbert Elementary decided that our students still deserved to have their college adventure, so we created the event on our campus,” Social Worker Jennifer Montes said.

The event was dubbed Explore UT Version 2.0.

Approximately 100 students showed up to Gilbert on April 22 to take part in activities such as weather forecasting using a green screen, glow blowing, ice cream making, taking part in mock trails, college BINGO, Drum Fit, career exploration,  stop motion video marking and the opportunity for students to take their college photo in complete cap and gown.

“The students really enjoyed their day and are looking forward to visiting UT next year,” Montes said.
