Gillette ES hosts first STEM family night of the year

Parents and students enjoyed a night full of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at Gillette Elementary on Oct. 5.

The night full of interactive activities kicked off the first of many upcoming stem nights set to take place in Harlandale ISD this school year.

Activities included creating your own stop motion animation movie, designing an airplane with paper goods and learning about density with a water and marble demonstration.

An additional piece to the STEM Night included a Global Cardboard Challenge where students had the opportunity to collaborate, learn and build the things they imagine through a simple process called Creative Play.

“The Challenge lets children explore their interests and passions; teaches critical thinking, resourcefulness, perseverance, teamwork and other 21ST Century skills,” GT Facilitator Sonia Cuellar explained.”

Cuellar also pointed out the ability of the challenge to bring the community together to foster and celebrate child creativity.
