Groundbreakings mark commencement of replacement projects

Construction for two brand new Harlandale ISD campuses is officially underway.

District officials and community members turned the first shovels of dirt for the Carroll Bell Elementary and Vestal Elementary Bond 2015 campus replacement projects on Thursday.

The new campuses will replace Carroll Bell and Vestal Elementary buildings, which are both more than 50 years old.

Carroll Bell was built in 1923 as San Jose Elementary. At the time, the campus only had two classes, the school now serves more than 500 students.

“This site has been through many changes, but today it begins a new chapter,” Superintendent Rey Madrigal said. “As we begin new construction of this brand new campus, our district and our community prove that we mean when we say that our students deserve the very best education and the finest facilities possible.”

Principal Taleen Bloom expressed gratitude to the community and Board for passing Bond 2015 and reminisced about the achievements made by Carroll Bell staff and students at the campus.

“It is going to be bitter sweet to see this building knocked down, however, the sweetness comes in just thinking about the new space our students will have,” Bloom said. “We look forward to the new memories that will be made in our brand new school.”

At Vestal Elementary, Principal Marianela Gonzalez thanked the community, Board and everyone involved in the project.

“This is an exciting time for our community, students, parents and teachers, very soon you are going to see this empty lot being built into a beautiful well-deserved school for our students and our community,” Gonzalez said. “Everyone here at Vestal is committed to providing the very best for Vestal and for our community.”

The elementary was built in 1965, the brand new campus will be facing Cantrell Rd.

With the ribbon cutting of Carroll Bell and Vestal Elementary slated for August 2018, Bond 2015 will be complete.
