HESA hosts 24th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser

The Harlandale Education Support Association, commonly referred to as HESA, held its 24th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser at The Emporium on May 24.

The evening, dubbed “Viva La HESA” with a Las Vegas theme, awarded scholarships, recognized some of the district’s top assistants and provided a night full of entertainment.

Each of the following seniors was presented with a $500 scholarship:

  • Cassandra Saldana - Harlandale HS
  • Xavier Gonzales – Harlandale HS
  • Savannah Leos - McCollum HS
  • Mayra Moreno - McCollum HS
  • Leya Longoria – Frank Tejeda Academy
  • Mariah Jimenez – STEM Early College HS

Over the past 24 years, HESA has awarded more than $50,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors, but it also rewards employees who are seeking a higher degree. This year, HESA awarded Jennifer Vega, Business Office Bookkeeper, with a Paraprofessional Scholarship.

HESA also announced the 2017-2018 Paraprofessionals of the Year: Gilbert Elementary Instructional Assistant Rachel Rodriguez and Pupil Personnel Administrative Assistant Magda Zuniga.

The celebration continued with performances by district staff. Information services kicked off the entertainment with “Viva the Legends,” followed by Frank Tejeda Academy Principal Ricardo Salmon singing “Fly Me to the Moon,” next up was a surprise dance act by McCollum HS Coach Matthew Almaraz and the “HESA Headliners” Claudia De Leon, Cynthia Martinez and Letty Tobais concluded the entertainment.

After much deliberation from the judges, Information Services’ “Viva the Legends” took home the first place trophy.

Guests enjoyed a delicious dinner and took home plenty of raffle prizes. HESA extends a sincere thank you to The Emporium for their contribution in making the event a huge success.
