HESA puts on the ritz for scholarships and a good time

The Harlandale Education Support Association, commonly referred to as HESA, held its 23rd Annual Scholarship Banquet at the Encino Ballroom on May 25.

The evening, dubbed “Putting on the Ritz” with a 1920s theme, awarded $3,500 to five graduating seniors, recognized some of the district’s top assistants and provided a night full of entertainment.

Each of the following seniors was presented with a $700 scholarship:

  • Desiree Teresa Del Toro - Frank Tejeda Academy
  • Maria Aurora Mancha - Harlandale HS
  • Caitlin McDonald - McCollum HS
  • Samantha Rodriguez - McCollum HS
  • Adam Salazar Jr. - Harlandale HS

Over the past 23 years, HESA has awarded more than $50,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors, but it also rewards employees who are seeking a higher degree. This year, HESA awarded Leticia Tobias, Human Resources administrative assistant, with a Paraprofessional Scholarship.

Three other HISD staff members were recognized as Employees of the Year: Information Services Administrative Assistant Cynthia Ramirez, Columbia Heights Instructional Assistant Joan Kunkler and Gilbert ES Clerical Assistant Samantha Calk.

The celebration continued with performances by three district groups. McCollum High School kicked off the entertainment with a “Cowboy Hee Haw” musical presentation, followed by a dance choreography from Tejeda Academy: “The Ritz Movers & Shakers” and by a dance routine from Information Services: “Technology in Motion.”

While the judges tallied up the scores, HESA President Claudia De Leon sang the popular song “You’re so Vain” with back up dancers Leticia Tobias and Cynthia Martinez.

Frank Tejeda Academy: “The Ritz Movers & Shakers” took home the first place trophy.

Guests enjoyed a special dinner and took home plenty of raffle prizes.

Congratulations on a great event, HESA!
