Harlandale High School senior Trinity Martinez advanced to the state Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) in San Marcos High School on April 26 and 27. This is the first time a Harlandale ISD art student goes to a state VASE competition.

The art student competed in the regional level of VASE at East Central High School earlier this month. She earned a red seal, which means she received the highest rating of four in Division 2, and a red, white and blue seal for advancing to state.

Her winning artwork is a pencil portrait of her little cousin.

“I felt inspired to draw my little cousin because my family has always been there for me,” Trinity said. “There is a new generation coming up, and I just want to support him the same way my family has been supporting me.”

Trinity has been drawing since she was a kid and credits her art teacher, Rey Campos, for encouraging her while she worked on her drawing.

“I’m really excited to see what happens at the state competition,” she said. “I just want to thank Mr. Campos and the students too for being very supportive.”

Campos is proud of Trinity and hopes she returns with the gold seal.

“Going to state is a great achievement not only for me or her, but for the entire district because it hasn’t been done before,” Campos said. “She is a great student, and this just shows her work ethic. I know she is already planning for a successful future.”

Congratulations and good luck, Trinity!
