HHS increases number of AP Scholars

A total of 18 Harlandale High School students earned an AP Scholar Award in the 2015-2016 school year, this is the most awards the school has earned in an academic year.

The award recognizes students who have demonstrated college-level achievement through AP courses and exams. Out of the 15 students recognized, 11 were seniors last year and 7 were juniors.

Harlandale High School graduates Sylvia Ricondo and Daniel Villa, who were seniors last year, earned the title of AP Scholar with Distinction for receiving an average score of at least a 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

Harlandale High School senior Gabriela Trejo, who was a junior last year, was deemed as an AP Scholar with Honor for receiving an average score of at least a 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams.

Trejo took a total of five exams for an average of a 3.4.

“I feel like the teachers really prepared us and made us feel comfortable,” Trejo said. “We took a lot of practice exams beforehand.”

And she’s not done yet, she’s going for more this year.

Harlandale High School Calculus Teacher Ms. Theresa Long said she saw the best results in AP Calculus than in any other year.

“I think the entire math department has a higher standard of learning for their students now so the kids are coming to calculus more prepared,” Long said.

The AP Scholars who took the calculus exam last spring have graduated already, but she is looking forward to next spring’s scores as the AP Scholars who were juniors last year are now in her class.

“I am extremely proud of my students, but I am actually even more excited for this year’s students and I think that the scores will be even higher this year,” Long added.

In the 2014-2015 school year there were a total of nine scholars, in 2013-2014 there were four scholars and in 2012-2013 there was one scholar.

Congratulation on the success, Indians!
