HHS student rewarded for being college bound

Harlandale HS senior Brianna Olivares was selected as the Generation TX San Antonio (GenTX SA) Student of the Month for being on top of her financial aid and college applications. In the last two months, she has applied to nine universities and is constantly on the hunt for scholarships.

Her hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed as GenTX SA rewarded her with a Fitbit to track her physicial activity in college.

“The vision for the Student of the Month incentive is to reward positive behavior and help foster a college going culture on the Harlandale campus,” said Fatema Basrai, youth coordinator and facilitator for P16Plus Council of Greater Bexar County.

Brianna was selected for the distinction by Harlandale High School Head Counselor Denise Flores and Trinity University College Adviser Julia Cottle.

“Brianna stood out because she uses the resources on campus, she’s been in the College Lab almost every day and she assists her peers with their applications,” Flores said. “She’s been very helpful with other students and encourages them when it comes to filling out their college applications and she’s just been a good example.”

The driving force behind Brianna’s enthusiasm for higher education is her mother, Elizabeth Olivares.

“I told her to pick a college of her choice, it doesn’t matter how much it costs, we will figure out a way to pay for it,” her mother said. “I always tell her to do as much as she can, the worst they can say is no.”

Brianna plans to major in criminal justice and her top choice is Sam Houston University, but if it doesn’t work out, she’s got eight other schools to fall back on.

Way to go, Brianna! Best of luck!
