HISD gears up for HEF Employee Fund Drive
Posted on 02/02/2018

The Harlandale Education Foundation Employee Fund Drive is only a few days away! To celebrate, HISD hosted its annual kick-off breakfast at Don Pedro Mexican Restaurant Thursday morning and announced this year’s theme: Heroes for HEF!

HISD is asking all of its employees to become “HEF-heroes” and donate during the HEF Employee Fund Drive, taking place Feb. 7 – 21.

During the event, HISD administrators and HEF representatives enjoyed a delicious breakfast buffet, courtesy of Don Pedro, and received information to make this year’s Employee Fund Drive the best one yet.

Last year’s goal of $50,000 was surpassed as HISD employees raised a total of $62,482! Every employee donation is matched dollar for dollar by a special friend of Harlandale.

HISD Superintendent Rey Madrigal talked about the importance of supporting HEF and hopes to set a new record this year.

“I can’t speak enough about our employees coming together and making the contributions to help our kids and give them a chance,” he said. “I challenge [them] to make our goal and give students an opportunity to go into higher education and help them be successful in life.”

The attendees also heard from HISD seniors who will receive a HEF scholarship this year.

Leya Longoria, a senior at Frank Tejeda Academy, plans to go to Palo Alto College and then transfer to a university to become a licensed veterinary technician.

“Your scholarship will be very helpful to me and my future,” she said. “I am thankful for all the teachers, administrators and staff that make this scholarship possible.”

Alma Celis, a senior at STEM ECHS, mentioned how proud she is to be a part of the first graduating class and how the HEF scholarship will help her achieve her goal of attending UT Austin to study chemistry and pursue a career in the pharmacy field.

“With the support from HEF, students like myself will be able to follow our dreams with the emotional and financial assistance from the Harlandale community,” Alma said. “I had a dream that one day I would go to college, and thanks to all the gracious professionals at Harlandale, that dream is becoming a reality.

HEF hopes to create a college-going community by offering a $625 or $1,250 scholarship to every HISD graduate who shows proof of attendance at any college, university or technical school.

To get attendees excited about the HEF Employee Fund Drive, the HISD Communications Department presented a fun video featuring HISD’s very own HEF-hero helping seniors learn all about HEF. New videos will also be released next week highlighting different HISD seniors.

Let's have a great 2018 HEF Employee Fund Drive!
