HISD hosts Halloween-themed Quiz Bowl

Harlandale ISD middle school students participated in a fun Halloween-themed Quiz Bowl at College Café on Oct. 28.

Hosted by the HISD Curriculum and Instruction Department, the event featured an array of questions covering math, science, history, music, art and Halloween!

Approximately 40 students participated with the help of their five coaches: Ms. Donachie and Mr. Huerta from Leal MS, Mr. Smiley from Harlandale MS, Ms. Hess from Terrell Wells MS and Mr. Sarmiento from Kingsborough MS.

“Our students did so well and were so enthusiastic,” Gabriella McMillian, HISD Curriculum and Instruction coordinator, said. “I think their parents found it very enjoyable and were so impressed with the students.”

According to McMillian, the academic competition is a big motivator for students to study all sorts of content that is not constrained by what the TEKS say.

“It’s another way for our students to shine in ways not connected to STAAR or grades,” McMillian concluded.

First place went to the TWMS Headless Trojans: Josiah Benavides, Arath Ramos, Emerson Vidales, Jessica Valenzuela, Nataly Lopez, Rubi Escalante and Jamie Perez.

Second place was given to the KMS Knights of Knowledge: Marissa Guel, Adrix Tankersley, Daniel V. Guel, Oscar Olviares and Matthew Calderon.

Third place went to the LMS Deadly Intentions: Nievez Lerma, Heaven Ibarra, Angel Quinonez, Adrian Falcon, Hugo Medina and Tommy Garza.

Congratulations to all the winners!
