HISD Interim Superintendent hosts Student Advisory Committee

Harlandale ISD Interim Superintendent Samantha Gallegos and the Student Advisory Committee (SAC) held their first meeting of the school year at Harlandale High School on Sept. 24.

The young leaders in grades 6-12 joined the committee for displaying qualities of excellence in education, leadership and citizenship.

During the meeting, the students learned more about their leadership role and had one-on-one access to some of the top administrators in the district.

Interim Superintendent Samantha Gallegos asked the students to divide into groups in order to get more acquainted with each other and describe what a student leader is to them.

“We want our student leaders to know one another and build friendships through the Student Advisory Committee,” Gallegos said. “The ultimate goal is for our students to become leaders in our community and be a voice for their campus.”

Kingsborough Middle School eighth-grade student Austin Fisher Acosta has been a part of the SAC for three years and is proud to help his district.

“I have learned to take initiative and to be more outspoken when it comes to my campus and life in general,” Austin said. “I’m glad that I am able to give back to my school and my district in some way.”

The students learned about various district events taking place throughout the school year, including National Night Out, and had the opportunity to ask administrators questions about their campus and safety.

HISD Chief of Police Michael Ramirez, also in attendance, shared the importance of providing a safe environment for all students and encouraged them to report any safety concern by calling (210) 932-SAFE.

SAC will meet three more times during the school year. The next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 3.
