HISD joins S.A. in statewide wellness challenge

Harlandale ISD is committed to helping San Antonio win the “It’s Time Texas Community Challenge” in 2018.

The statewide competition encourages Texans to exercise and make healthier choices when it comes to eating. Cities and communities across the state are divided into five population categories – metro, large, mid-sized, small and extra small.

HISD students, faculty and staff can help the Alamo City win the challenge by registering for the challenge at www.ittcommunitychallenge.com, taking the pledge, sharing selfies of them excercising or eating a healthy meal, organizing fitness events, tracking physical activity as well as tracking weight loss. Logging all of these activities earns participants points.

Individuals are also encouraged to visit itstimetexas.org/shareyourstory to promote wellness activities at their campus.

Gilbert Elementary’s Mayor’s Fitness Council Ambassadors and Kids School Health Advisory Council (KSHAC) are leading the challenge at Harlandale ISD. The students met with Superintendent Rey Madrigal on Jan. 12 to present him with the pledge. Getting his signature in support of the challenge resulted in a whopping 2,000 points.

Madrigal encourages all principals, staff and PTA members in the district to sign the Community Challenge Pledges.

The three-month competition began on Jan. 8 and will conclude March 4.

The city that garners the most points will receive a grant to use toward health and wellness activities and the district that earns the most points will win a trophy as well as bragging rights.

“We’re trying to help our city as well as our district to be number one in our categories,” Gilbert ES Social Worker Jennifer Montes said.  “Its web-based so everyone can access it, we are encouraging not only our staff, but parents as well. Anybody in the community can join.”

Just by registering, individuals win 50 points. Individuals can also win their own rewards if they earn a certain amount of points.

This is the sixth annual “It’s Time Texas Community Challenge.” The City of Austin won last  year, but San Antonio won the four years prior. Let’s get our bragging rights back, San Antonio!
