A total of 20 Harlandale ISD parents graduated in cap and gown from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program on Feb. 15.

The program offers practical lessons in basic nutrition, food preparation, food budget management and food safety. It also includes a physical component as an important part of living healthy lives.

“The physical activities are fun and easy and can be done at home,” 21st Century ACE Family Engagement Specialist Maria Ayon explained. “Program graduates reflect significant, lasting improvement in eating behaviors and food habits.”

The four week course was held on Tuesdays and Thursday for two hours. Young parents as well as grandparents attended the course.

“Programs like these help parents gain personal knowledge, improve their family healthy habits, feel productive, gain self-esteem and in addition start a family network as these parents make long lasting friendships,” Ayon said.

Moreover, Ayon added that some of the parents never had the opportunity to go to college and graduate, therefore, graduating with honors and cap and gown is a milestone in their lives that teaches their children the importance of continuing their education no matter the age.

Congrats, grads!
