HISD recognizes school board members

In honor of School Board Recognition Month, Harlandale ISD celebrated its Board of Trustees with a special dinner held at the McCollum HS library on Jan. 18.

As elected officials, President Carlos Quezada, Vice President Ricardo Moreno, Secretary Christine Carrillo and members David Abundis, Juan Mancha, Esequiel Mendoza and Jesus Tejeda are the voice of our community, serving first and foremost in the best interest of all Harlandale ISD students.

This year’s theme is “Helping kids soar to success,” which is a true testament to their service. They are Harlandale’s best volunteers because they volunteer to serve our district by giving their time, energy and council to the district – without pay.

The night kicked off with MHS seniors Robert Aviles and Alexis Garcia welcoming the board members, administrators and principals. Together, they enjoyed a delicious dinner from Nicha’s Comida Mexicana, which was served with the help of McCollum culinary arts students led by Chef John Stewart.

Afterwards, HISD Superintendent Rey Madrigal took a moment to personally thank the Board of Trustees and presented them with a beautiful gift basket and certificate.

“Our board members serve as a guide to provide our students an excellent education while they also serve as a voice for the community,” he said. “Their families make sacrifices as they spend any number of hours addressing the needs of our school district. Each board member uses their background experiences and skills as they consider complex and demanding decisions for the good of our students.”

Following the dinner, the School Board members were surprised with another gift bag, a plaque and a special video at the School Board Meeting.

HISD schools and students are also celebrating School Board Recognition Month by posting messages of appreciation on their campus marquees and sending colorful “thank you” cards to each board member every week.
