Approximately 40 Harlandale ISD students participated in the district’s UIL Middle School Invitational Meet at McCollum High School on Nov. 3.

The academic competition featured 17 different events representing all subject areas including ELAR, fine arts, mathematics, science and social studies. Two writing events were also previously held on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1.

The Invitational Meet was successful and helped prepare students and their coaches for the district competition scheduled for March 2.

District coordinators started the A+ Academics Middle School UIL Meet last school year after a 15-year hiatus to increase student engagement in school.

“A+ Academics is not only a good way to build school pride, but it also boosts students’ self-esteem,” HISD Social Studies Coordinator Rubina Pantoja said. “UIL helps motivate students to work hard in school so they are eligible to represent their school and compete with other students like them.”

Overall, Harlandale MS scored 497 points, Kingsborough 272 points and Leal MS 250 points.

Congratulations to all the students who participated!
