HISD students showcase talent at District Art Show

Oil paintings, sketches, sculptures and more showcased the talent of Harlandale ISD students at the District Art Show held at McCollum High School on May 15.

Several hundred pieces of student artwork, from kindergarten through 12th grade, were displayed for the community to enjoy. Whether it was a self-portrait, pop-up art or watercolor landscape, every piece of art exposed all the creativity found in the district.

Dozens of families proudly walked by every panel, admiring the various projects their children worked on throughout the year. Some parents even used their smartphones to take photos of their favorite pieces.

Art teachers from all grade levels were also present to greet the parents and took the opportunity to share ideas for upcoming art projects.

For HISD Fine Arts Coordinator Omar Leos, the annual event not only promotes art within the community, but also helps encourage students to pursue art as a career.

“It’s amazing what these kids can do,” he said. “Art is more than a hobby, and we want them to know if they want to do this, they can definitely do it as a career.”

Before leaving the art show, families were also treated to an array of delicious cakes.
