HMS earns six TEA distinctions

Harlandale Middle School is the only public middle school in San Antonio that earned six or more Texas Education Agency (TEA) distinctions for the 2017-2018 school year.

HMS's distinction designations include Academic Achievement in Mathematics, Academic Achievement in Science, Academic Achievement in Social Studies, Top 25 Percent Comparative Academic Growth, Post-secondary Readiness, and Top 25 Percent Comparative Closing the Gaps.

"We are very proud of our accomplishments. It takes a team that is focused and supportive of not just their department but of everyone at HMS," HMS Principal Ricardo Marroquin said. "From the core subjects, to the electives, to the fine arts, to athletics, we have one goal, and that is to be the best."

Marroquin and his staff are proud of all the students and hope to accomplish more in the future.

"I'm very proud of our school and our kids!" HMS Social Studies Teacher Kellie George said. "We have good kids who understand that good things come from hard work ... and they're able to see now the fruits of their labor."

ELA Teacher Carla Jones agreed and added, "I am proud to contribute to the ongoing journey in receiving our distinctions. Although our students face various obstacles in their path, they have displayed a tenacious ability to overcome adversity. These accolades are not possible without the support of the faculty and staff who go the extra mile every day for our students. The only limits we have are the limits we put on ourselves."
