The Harlandale Middle School intermediate Mariachi students had the opportunity to perform for NASA Astronaut Joe Acaba at the Scobee Education Center on May 12.

Acaba recently returned from the international space station and was giving a speech that day, which also happened to be his birthday.

The students surprised him with cake and performed “Las Mañanitas,” followed by “Happy Birthday,” “Cariño,” “El Rey” and “Hermoso Cariño.”

“This performance went exactly as planned, and our students performed beautifully,” HISD Mariachi Director Edwardo Cantu said. “After the performance was over, the students looked very proud and were very conversational with Mr. Acaba.”

Cantu decided to bring the intermediate group to perform at the Scobee Education Center as a reward for their hard work this school year.

“We are very grateful for this opportunity. The hosts at the Scobee Education Center were very friendly, and we hope to play for them again soon.”

Way to go, HMS intermediate mariachi!
