Harlandale Bridging Committee strives to create network between students and industry leaders

Harlandale ISD educators met with industry leaders during the first Harlandale Bridging Committee (HBC) meeting of the school year on Sept. 14 at Harlandale High School in an effort to bridge the gap between high school, industry and post-secondary education.

The Career Technology Education (CTE) department announced the creation of the committee last spring to build a network of industry leaders with a vested interest in the HISD community, establish a committed resource for district educators and help prepare students for post-secondary education and the workforce.

The meeting was attended by a large group of HISD high school educators and local industry leaders, which included a policeman, a firefighter, a McDonald’s owner, a WellMed employee and a Wells Fargo representative. The committee also discussed ways to incorporate them in this year’s Career Fair events.  

 “We offered an invitation to industry leaders to come and visit with teachers to start building relationships and find resources that the industry can provide,” Harlandale High School CTE Department Chair Raynaldo Garza said. “We will start arranging guest speaking opportunities, as well as other programs that employers may offer for our kids to participate in.”

According to Garza, this is a district-wide initiative to create a successful network between educators and employers in every career cluster, as well as provide new opportunities for HISD students to reach their full potential.

“As an alum of Harlandale, there was never an opportunity like this before. Kids would have to go reach out on their own or have a relative or family member,” he said. “This is an opportunity for the kids that don’t have that helping hand to show or guide them. Hopefully, we can use this as a springboard to that.”

The second meeting one will take place in the spring of 2018.
