The Harlandale HS Varsity Treble Chorus and the Harlandale HS Varsity Mixed Chorus earned Sweepstakes at the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading evaluations at Highlands HS on April 18.

This is the first time the Harlandale HS choir has earned a Sweepstake trophy at the Varsity level in school history.

The UIL Music Evaluations are split up in two parts.

“The first task we must undertake is to perform music in a concert setting that we’ve prepared which must be selected from a prescribed list and level of difficulty according to our Varsity/Non-Varsity levels, as well as being a part of a 5A school,” Harlandale HS Choir Director Jacob Valadez explained.

Three different judges evaluate them on a given rubric and score them on how well they have executed the criteria for the portion.

The second part of the UIL Music Evaluation is the sight-reading portion where the group is given a piece of music that they’ve never seen before and are expected to sing it with minimal deficiencies using the skills they’ve learned in the classroom to be able to read rhythmic articulations as well as pitch intervals. Three different judges evaluate them on a given rubric and score them based on how well they have executed the criteria for this portion.

Each judge is tasked with scoring the choir on a rating scale of 1 (Superior) to 5 (Poor). The scores for each judge are then averaged and the group is given an overall rating for each of the two portions of the event. An overall rating of a Division 1 in both sections earns the choir a “Sweepstakes” trophy. Both participating HHS choirs had the distinct honor of earning this recognition

“This recognition means so much to the HHS choir students and myself as they’ve worked so hard for this and hard work really does pay off,” Valadez said. “The feeling is even more profound in that the HHS choir has never earned this distinction before. We are making history!”

Valadez and the students extend a big thank you to Fine Arts Coordinator Omar Leos, Harlandale HS Principal Alfred Anthony as well as the entire Harlandale family for their support.

Way to go, Harlandale Indians!
