February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and Harlandale High School joined the movement by hosting a series of events this week to empower young students to build healthy relationships.

This year’s theme is “Huddle Up for Healthy Relationships” to help spread awareness and start the conversation.

The special week kicked off with powerful presentations by the San Antonio Police Department and Harlandale HS Theatre Department highlighting healthy relationships and consequences of unhealthy relationships.

Students wore the color orange on Tuesday to create awareness about dating abuse. On Wednesday, students and staff celebrated “Love is Day,” where students wrote encouraging and positive messages about love and healthy relationships on colorful Post-Its and placed them in front of the cafeteria doors for everyone to see.

Students also created a colorful sidewalk mural depicting “Love and Respect” on Thursday. Students were encouraged to sign their name along the mural pledging to have healthy, safe relationships.

“The ultimate goal is to have a dialogue with students in regards to healthy relationships and making sure they understand when healthy relationships become unhealthy and abusive,” Harlandale HS Social Worker Michael Bustos said. “We hope to continue to promote positive relationships here on campus.”
