Harlandale HS helps seniors get college-ready

Harlandale High School recently offered an opportunity for students to get a head start on their road to college.

The school partnered with Trinity Advising Corps and Café College to host a senior summer seminar on Aug. 8. More than 140 seniors attended the event, where they were able to begin their university admission applications and obtain their Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID – the first step to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

“Since the FAFSA applications were moved up to October, we decided to get a head start as well,” Harlandale HS Counselor Adriana Renteria said. “We thought it would be a good idea for them to start working on their college applications on Apply Texas and work on their FSA ID.”

Seniors have to create an FSA for themselves and another one for one of their parents in order to complete the FAFSA.

“The students are creating their own today, and we’re encouraging them to take the form and do the steps at home with their parents. So that by the time FAFSA opens up in October, they are set because they will have both of the IDs to complete the FAFSA,” Renteria explained.

The counselors and advisors assisted students during the process and answered many questions.

“Some of them are wondering or thinking what they want their career to be, and some are deciding on what university to apply for depending on what they want to major on,” Renteria said.

Other students were also working on their admission essays.

“Since we gave them the essay options last school year, some already have a rough draft. So today, they are working on making some changes,” Renteria added.

Overall, the seminar was a success as five classrooms were filled with students and a sixth classroom had to be added.

“The whole day is dedicated on helping out seniors get that head start. It is very exciting to see how many of them are here,” Renteria concluded.
