Harlandale High School art students Melanie Fraire and and Pedro Flores were selected among the top four winners in the 2019 Society of Animal Artists (SAA) scholarship program for the San Antonio region.

As winners, the students will have their work on display at the Briscoe Western Art Museum on Sept. 19-21 and will receive $1,000 for their school’s art program.

The program received a total of 67 entries from 13 schools and 57 students. The SAA jury consisted of seven members, who ranked each artwork on a scale of 1-5 overall.

The jurors selected a first place winner, but had a three-way tie for second place.  The specific top awards will be announced at the opening reception on Sept. 19. The students will be honored guests that evening and will be accompanied by their teacher and parents.

HHS Art Teacher Melissa Ramos is extremely proud of her students.

“I am so happy for my students. They are amazing and talented,” Flores said. “Their winning artwork is fantastic. We have so much talent in our district. I knew we would have some winners or at least recognition.”

Way to go, Melanie and Pedro!
