Harlandale HS unveils new cosmetology lab

HHS Cosmetology Lab Grand Opening

Harlandale High School celebrated the grand opening of its new Cosmetology Lab during the school’s Open House event on Sept. 12.

The lab unveiled state-of-the-art equipment including new hair styling stations with direct lighting, pedicure chairs, shampoo bowls, manicure tables, portable hair dryers, chairs with towel and shampoo storage, and a new hydraulic facial chair.

“We are absolutely ecstatic because this is a total upgrade,” HHS Cosmetology Teacher Cecilia Reyna said. “This program holds a special place in my heart, so we can’t wait to start working in here.”

The two-year program provides 25 students per year the opportunity to earn a Cosmetology Operator License upon completing the program at Harlandale HS.

“I know the program has been going strong for over 47 years, and I am a product of the program,” Reyna added. “I’m super excited to be here, and I wouldn’t be anywhere else because this is home.”

Reyna teaches students the foundations for haircutting, hair coloring, hairstyling, makeup artistry and manicuring techniques.

Seniors Yazmine Frias and Jasmin Sevilla are grateful to be a part of the program as they are both pursuing a career in cosmetology.

“I think it’s amazing that we get to start fresh senior year. It’s a big upgrade,” Yazmine said. “I can’t wait to start using all of the equipment.”

Jasmin agreed and added, “It looks more professional. I’m excited to get my license because I know this is what I’ve always wanted to do in the future.”

In the classroom, students also received new desks, storage area for their cosmetology kits and lockers that are required by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

“We are excited about this new classroom and lab experience that will provide students with the most up-to-date equipment and learning environment while they prepare to become a cosmetologist,” HISD District CTE Coordinator Tracy Anderson said.

A special thank you to Harlandale ISD’s M.O.S.T. department who helped with the plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work.  Great job!
