Harlandale Hall of Fame welcomes five new inductees

The Harlandale Hall of Fame inducted five new members during a special ceremony and dinner at Harlandale High School on Nov. 8.

With more than 100 family members, friends and alumni in attendance, Harlandale officials honored Harlandale HS alumni John Dominguez and Don Rackler, McCollum HS alumni Fred Richard Shussler and John Villanueva, as well as community service inductee Albert Arriaga.

The night featured a mariachi performance, followed by a dinner catered by Nicha’s Comida Mexicana Restaurant.

Superintendent Rey Madrigal, Board of Trustees Vice President Ricardo Moreno and Hall of Fame Board President Bill Barrett each delivered a special message and congratulated the honorees before the awards presentation.

Each honoree was introduced via a special video produced by the McCollum High School Cowboy Productions team. After receiving a plaque from Superintendent Madrigal, every inductee delivered a touching acceptance speech dedicating their award to Harlandale mentors and families.

Dominguez, a 1996 HHS graduate, was known for being the all-time leading scorer in basketball during his four years there. After working in the financial sector for several years, he opened WhipStitch Custom Cakes in the Southtown area. Since 2007, he serves as chairman for the Harlandale Alumni Basketball Association, which features a three-day weekend community event.

Rackler graduated from HHS in 1974. He then started the Jon Wayne Heating and Air Company, which currently employs 180 people and has been named a top workplace in San Antonio.

A MHS graduate of 1972, Shussler spent one year with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. He has raised funds for many charities including Elf Louise, United Way and First Presbyterian Church.

Villanueva, a 1987 MHS graduate, is the owner of Electric Cowboys and Grupo Vida. He recently helped organize and promote Tim Duncan’s Arm Drop Race and two concerts for victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Arriaga, recognized for his community service work, has served numerous civic, community and church activities for more than 30 years in the Harlandale community.

The 2017 Hall of Fame inductees will also be honored during a pregame ceremony at 6:30 p.m. prior to Frontier Bowl at Harlandale Memorial Stadium this Friday.

Founded in 1985, the Harlandale Hall of Fame has honored over 200 outstanding alumni who have made great contributions to society and have accomplished notable personal and professional goals.

Congratulation to all the inductees!
