Harlandale ISD Bus Driver Beatrice Castro was surprised with the 2018-2019 Property Casualty Alliance of Texas (PCAT) Bus Driver of the Year Award on Feb. 27.

Harlandale ISD Transportation Director Christopher Ramirez presented the award to Castro during the Transportation Department meeting in front of all of her colleagues and friends.

The award is based upon multiple driver attributes: leadership, attitude, perseverance, student and parent relationships, and technical skill.

Castro was overjoyed with the news and feels grateful for this recognition as she is celebrating her 25th year serving the Harlandale district.

“I’m very happy. I was not expecting it,” she said. “I work with special needs students, and that’s why I do it. I do it for them, so this is an honor.”

Castro was also selected to receive the award for demonstrating a consistent desire to positively influence both students and co-workers through her actions and attitudes, and not just words.

Each day, school bus drivers are entrusted with safely transporting children to and from school. No matter the weather conditions or the traffic, their performance on the road must always be A+.

PCAT recognizes that school bus drivers help set the tone for children's daily experiences. Typically, the bus driver is the first school person who children see in the morning and the last they see in the afternoon. And, just as it's said about great school teachers, PCAT believes that the same holds true for the best school bus drivers --- it's not a job, it's a calling.

Congratulations, B!
