Harlandale ISD celebrates FTA graduates

A total of 39 Frank Tejeda Academy graduates crossed the McCollum HS auditorium stage to receive their long-awaited diplomas on June 1.

The Harlandale ISD Board of Trustees and members of the Superintendent’s cabinet were on hand to congratulate the graduates. Excited family members and friends beamed with pride when their special graduate was called.

For many of these young adults, earning a diploma has a very special meaning. Frank Tejeda Academy is known as the land of second chances, and that’s exactly what these graduates got.

Graduate of the Year Salvador Alvear gave it his all to reach this milestone.

“I stayed after school every day and I was always on time,” Salvador said. “Even when I had half-day I still stayed the whole day.”

When he was acknowledged for his hard work, he was overwhelmed with emotions.

“I wanted to cry when I won Graduate of the Year, but everyone was right there,” Salvador said amid smile.

Reaching this goal was been a long time coming for him.

“It’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid,” he said. “I wanted to do this for my parents and myself.”

Now that he has his diploma, Salvador will be joining the Marines.

Congratulations Frank Tejeda Academy Class of 2017! Harlandale ISD is proud of you. We wish you luck as you start the next chapter in your life.
