Wright Elementary took home first place and Rayburn Elementary came in fourth place at the I Play! Basketball Tournament held at Mission Concepcion Sports Complex on Feb. 25.

A total of 10 Harlandale ISD schools and 35 San Antonio ISD schools went head to head for victory.

“All of our 10 schools had a great time and were very dedicated toward their coaches,” HISD Lead Wellness and P.E. Facilitator Dolly Armstrong said.

I Play! Coach for Wright Elementary A.J. Moreno is beyond ecstatic that his students took home the big win.

“The trophy the Wright students won on Saturday is now in the trophy case located at the entrance of the school and my students tell me that every time they pass by it from now on, they'll get a huge smile on their face because they know that it was truly them who got that trophy there,” Moreno said. “It means so much to me for these set of students to accomplish such a task, and to have them get recognized for it has got to be the best feeling ever.”

I Play! is a free afterschool program offered at Harlandale ISD. The program’s objectives are to increase attendance, improve grades, and support good behavior while also experiencing Soccer, Tennis, Track and Field, Basketball, and Volleyball.

Other Harlandale schools that competed in the tournament include Adams, Bellaire, Collier, Morrill, Stonewall Flanders, Gilbert, Gillette and Vestal.
