Harlandale ISD employees participated in a “Stop the Bleed” campaign training in honor of National Stop the Bleed Day.

The Joint Trauma System at Fort Sam Houston, along with U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force active and retired doctors and nurses, visited Harlandale ISD’s Scheh Center on May 23 to share the latest techniques on how to stop the bleeding and prevent death in crises.

The participants learned how to exercise a proper alert system and identify bleeding, as well as how to use three different ways to stop the bleeding either compression by pressure, compression by packing or compression by tourniquets. As a token of appreciation, each participant received 50 tourniquets at the end of the training.

“The goal of this training is to have staff trained on bleed control should an emergency occur at the campus,” Harlandale ISD Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Samantha Gallegos said. “We hope to train more Harlandale ISD employees in the future to support medical staff with emergency procedures should an incident occur.”

Harlandale ISD librarians and social workers plan to share what they learned at their campuses to spread the message throughout the district.
