Approximately 60 of Harlandale’s seventh grade gifted and talented students took a trip to Region 20 Education Service Center for their annual GT Student Conference on April 13.

The conference was organized by Region 20’s GT Coordinator Rolando Ruvalcaba and afforded our students with an opportunity to choose from more than 60 different topics to explore. The topics were as diverse as the participants as there were more than 30 different schools in attendance from all over the San Antonio area. The offerings ranged from “Dance Meditation” to “Harry Potter, Hitler, the Holocaust, and You.”

The name for this year’s conference was accurately called, “Breaking Barriers,” as our students found themselves participating in activities not regularly afforded to them at their home campus and all the while doing so with peers from diverse backgrounds.

“Our students were intrigued by the titles of the workshops that they were able to choose from and, in fact, they chose their entire schedule for the day, so that was pretty neat for them,” Harlandale ISD GT Facilitator Charles Hernandez said.

In addition to our student participants, HISD’s Elementary GT Facilitator Sonia Cuellar accompanied more than a dozen of our district’s parents to sessions specifically designed for them.

“Our parents were excited to hear about information that will help them in furthering their children’s education,” Cuellar said.
