Harlandale ISD hosts second annual Battle of the Books

2019 District Battle of the Books

Third through fifth graders tested their literary knowledge at Adams Elementary for the second annual District Battle of the Books on April 30.

A total of 13 teams from across the district battled it out by answering fun trivia questions about 20 different books on the 2018-19 Texas Bluebonnet list.

Parents, administrators, teachers and students packed the school’s cafeteria to support their favorite team and elementary campus. The friendly competition, which was emceed by Dr. Leonardo Zepeda, sparked excitement and cheers from the crowd.

After three exciting rounds, the winners were announced. Morrill Elementary earned first place, followed by Gilbert Elementary in second and Carroll Bell in third.

Morrill Elementary Librarian Desiree Benavides said the event was a great opportunity for students to strengthen their reading skills while having fun.

“Students love competitions,” she said. “They learned how to work as a team and collaborate with their peers while they improved their comprehension from reading and branched out to new genres, which is needed to create lifelong learners and readers.”
