Harlandale ISD hosts successful Fiesta Family Night

Nearly 400 parents and students enjoyed an evening full of learning during Harlandale ISD’s Fiesta Family Night held at the McCollum High School cafeteria on April 5.

All the families had the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun and creative activities – all related to the district’s curriculum.

HISD Parent and Adult Education Coordinator Ruth Zambrano organizes the event every year to increase family engagement not just at school, but also at home.

“We have all the departments here tonight, such as math, science, social studies and language arts, doing activities for all grade levels,” HISD Parent and Adult Education Coordinator Ruth Zambrano said. “Our goal is for families to learn new activities tonight that they can also do at home.”

With festive Selena music playing in the background, students and parents made their way to different stations, where they learned how to make their own lava lamp, operate a robot, design their own “Fiesta medal” and much more. They also participated in fun and competitive games such as Lotería and nutrition quizzes.

Some of the Fiesta-themed activities included a fun photo booth, creating paper flowers, “papel picado” and ponchos.

The event also featured an entertaining performance by the Gillette Choir, delicious hot dogs and cookies for the families to enjoy, as well as information about other district programs such as AVANCE, CTE, counseling and health.

Overall, the event was successful, and the students were provided with their own math game with dominoes to continue the learning at home.
