Harlandale ISD hosts Veteran’s Day Ceremony

Current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces attended a celebration in their honor at STEM Early College High School on Nov. 10.

Under the direction of Retired U.S. Air Force Msgt. Mario Mendoza, students of the Harlandale Alternative Center (HAC) and STEM Early College HS prepared a patriotic presentation for all the veterans.

“The students are looking forward to participating and honoring all the veterans here at HAC, the district and the Harlandale area,” HAC Principal Andrew Dominguez said. “We will honor and celebrate their service.”

Retired CWO1 Michael Brooks, Retired Lt. Col. Hector V. Villarreal and District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran delivered inspiring messages for all the attendees and thanked all the veterans present.

The Gillette Spurs Choir, under the direction of Dr. Leonardo Zepeda, impressed all the attendees with three moving performances throughout the ceremony.

“Our commitment to family, to community and to one another is the tradition in which we all stand here,” Councilwoman Viagran said. “That is representative of our commitment to our veterans, to honor those who have gone before us, to honor those who have sacrificed for each and every one of us, and to honor those who have given themselves for the country and for our community.”

Earning applause and cheers, she concluded the ceremony by referencing the choir’s performance when they sang about standing strong: “I think we should remember to always stand strong like that because we’re all from the South Side, and that’s the strongest side of San Antonio.”
